Morbius director Daniel Espinosa teases connections to Venom as well as potential ties to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and confirms that at least one version of Spider-Man exists in the movie’s universe. The film will introduce Dr. Michael Morbius (Jared Leto). who, while searching for a cure for his rare blood disease, instead stumbles upon vampirism. In addition to Leto, the cast includes Matt Smith, Adria Arjona, Jared Harris, Al Madrigal, and Tyrese Gibson.

In the wake of Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), Sony Pictures is continuing to focus on its seemingly disconnected Spider-Man Universe. While Tom Holland’s Peter Parker/Spider-Man is operating within the MCU, the webslinger’s comic book roster is getting fleshed out in Sony’s pocket of the multiverse. Following Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021), Morbius marks the second Spider-Man antagonist/anti-hero to get the live-action, solo treatment. Preceding the upcoming Kraven The Hunter and Madame Web films, Leto’s Morbius presumably exists in the same universe as Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock/Venom. Multiple Morbius trailers have featured easter eggs including a Venom reference, Spider-Man graffiti, Oscorp, the Daily Bugle, and even Michael Keaton’s Adrian Toomes/Vulture.

During a Q&A with Cinemablend on Twitter, Daniel Espinosa confirmed Morbius exists in the same universe as Venom. On top of that, the director said that there is indeed a Spider-Man in that world. However, he wouldn’t reveal which Spider-Man. Though he did say that audiences will find out soon enough. Check out the exchange below:

No Way Home brought Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Men into Holland’s universe. At the end of the film, Garfield and Maguire’s webslingers were sent back to their respective realities—as was Venom in the post-credits scene. With the introduction of the Marvel multiverse, any version of Spider-Man, including/excluding Garfield and Maguire’s characters, could exist in the Morbius/Venom universe. While the aforementioned Spider-Man graffiti led many to believe Maguire’s version would show up, Sony likely riddled Morbius’ trailers with misleading easter eggs to allow for multiple options moving forward. That said, fans have been advocating for Garfield to appear in Sony’s revamped Spider-Man Universe and the actor seems open to returning for the right project. When Morbius was delayed yet again, some theorized Garfield was filming scenes to be put in the movie.

Unfortunately, early fan reactions to Morbius call it disjointed and incoherent. Furthermore, rumors suggest many of the film’s easter eggs, including Keaton’s appearance, have been cut. It’ll be hard for audiences not to feel baited by multiverse-related teases if those reports are accurate. Ever since Marvel Studios launched its cohesive MCU, other studios have tried to haphazardly replicate it without first truly planning their own worlds. The recently announced Madame Web should help tie together Sony’s universe. Hopefully, Morbius proves a worthy addition to that universe when it releases in theaters on April 1, 2022.
