Mikel Arteta outlines what Arsenal must do to compete for the Premier League title

Mikel Arteta has outlined what Arsenal must do to compete for the Premier League title.

The Gunners are currently 4th in the Premier League, 19 points adrift of Manchester City (now 16) who occupy the summit at present. Arsenal do have two games in hand, but even if they win those, it would still be a 13-point gap with only nine games of the season left to play.

So, it is pretty obvious that Arsenal need to improve in certain aspects of their game to truly challenge the links of Manchester City and Liverpool.

One such area looks to be the goalscoring department, with Mikel Arteta stating that, to truly challenge the top teams, you have to score 90 to 100 goals:

“To be with the top teams in this season you need to score 90 to 100 goals at least,” he said. “Somehow you need those goals in the team. Don’t ask me how, but you need them.

“They have to come. That contribution, how it’s done and how possible it is to happen, you have to find the right pieces to do that. But that’s a non-negotiable, that’s for sure.”

Arsenal’s goalscoring record

Arsenal have so far scored 43 goals from their 27 league games this term, which is pretty close to their xG of 44.15.

This works out at 1.56 goals per 90 minutes which, if Arsenal keep scoring at that rate for the rest of 2021/22, would see them net 59 goals.

In comparison, Manchester City are currently scoring at a rate of 2.28 per 90, Liverpool at a rate of 2.59 per 90 and Chelsea 2.00 per 90.

So, it is fairly obvious Arsenal’s goalscoring must be improved up to truly match the top sides.
