Ralf Rangnick issues injury update on Manchester United pair ahead of Atletico Madrid clash

Ralf Rangnick has issued a mixed team news update ahead of Manchester United’s clash with Atletico Madrid at Old Trafford on Tuesday evening.

Both Luke Shaw and Bruno Fernandes missed out on their 3-2 win over Tottenham on Saturday evening, and there is mixed news about their availability for the biggest game of the season so far for the Red Devils.

For Shaw, Rangnick claimed that the defender will be back in training ahead of the game, but it was a different story for Fernandes.

‘Luke (Shaw) hopefully will be back in training Monday’, the United boss told the media. ‘Bruno we will have to wait and see until Tuesday. This will probably be a last-minute race with him – due to COVID-19.’

Fernandes, who has struggled this season, would nonetheless prove a massive miss for the Red Devils, given the quality he brings to their midfield.

The state of play

The Reds head into the second leg of their last 16 tie with the advantage of being at home, having come away with a credible if undeserved 1-1 draw at the Wanda Metropolitano three weeks ago.

And, since then, their form has been patchy, with a generally poor performance against Tottenham overshadowed by a brilliant hat-trick from Cristiano Ronaldo, that ultimately won his side all three points.

Atletico, meanwhile, have won all three of their games since the first leg, and are the form team coming into the tie, despite the Red Devils having the home advantage.

Manchester United will be hoping for a European run deep into the Champions League knockout rounds to rescue what has been a dismal season to date, but Simeone and co. may have something to say about that.
